AFAIK, this information is completely false. Only interfaces which you
feel belong in your backbone (transit) area should be declared to be in
area 0.
All others shall not be placed in Area 51, as that is a classified area.
:)

Each area must link back to area 0 directly. Each OSPF router needs to be
able to "find clue" towards area 0.

I might go so far as to put the Portmasters' modems into a separate area.
Doing this will prevent constant recalculation (and possible
redistribution) of customer-specific modem addresses and/or routes
assigned behind your modems within area 0.
In other words, the Portmaster's ethernet interface belongs in area 0, and
the modems belong in area 1.
> The PPP link between the two Ciscos should be in area ?.
If it is considered to be quite stable, it can be in area 0. In this
case, your remote Cisco should have a serial interface in area 0 and an
appropriate ethernet interface in the area you've selected for this POP.
Otherwise, put it in the area you're using for your remote POP. In this
case, your remote Cisco will have all applicable interfaces (presumably,
at least one serial and one ethernet) in your remote area.

I would put these in an area besides area 0.
