I missed your original message, so this may be too late to help, but
there is a DEFINATE compatability problem between an Ascend running STAC
(Stac-9 in their profile) and the PM3. I've had to disable STAC compression
on all Ascend units that call into the PM3, because it will do exactly
as you describe - the connection will "hang" every so often. It seems
to be data-dependant; there is some corrolation to certain web pages or
FTP sites causing it to happen. After a few minutes, it will usually
come back and start passing data again. Disconnecting manually from either
end will allow it to reconnect and start working immediately. A "set
debug 0x51" on the PM3 shows a series of CCP RESET and CCP RESET ACK
messages while the connection is "hung".
I have an open ticket on this; I guess Simon is working on it, but I
haven't heard anything for a couple weeks.
