Ok, I over-generalized a wee bit. You can use AT dial strings - but it
does not have an AT setting systme like a 'normal' modem.

Actually when you set a port for telnet like this you do not connect to a
modem, you connect to the PORT. There is normally no modem assigned to a
port. When you do 'at' and get ok you get it from the HDLC controller
seeing that the line is there. The modem is only grabbed if you issue a
dial string that requires a modem. Otherwise it is all V.120.
And since there is no modem connected to a port until a call arrives,
you cannot 'camp' on a modem and watch for 'RING' and then tell it to answer.
It just doesn't work that way.
