I'm really -not- looking forward to this fall. On 10/2/1999, it will
become necessary to dial 1+10 digits when dialing all local calls in
the 408 area code, due to the new overlay of the 669 area code. Right
now we are in a permissive stage, where you can dial with either 7-digit
dialing or 1+10-digit dialing. We're starting to educate users now, so
they can get their dialin numbers modified appropriately, but I fully
expect that during the week of 10/2 we're going to get a lot of support
calls from our analog users. The 415 and 510 area codes will get similar
overlays and mandatory 1+10-digit dialing during the year 2000.
I believe ISDN calls already have mandatory 10-digit dialing, though.

Of course, our PRIs all deliver 7-digits of called number information,
no matter how you dial. (Some are from WorldCom, some are from ICG.)
For accounting purposes, this isn't -horrible-, since the numbers are
all unique anyway. But I really would like to get the full 10 digits
transmitted. I'll have to try bothering them to see if it's possible.
