(PM) cistron radius 1.5.4.3 slow startup

We are using cistron radius 1.5.4.3 on RedHat Linux boxes.

Normally we have little or no trouble with it. But this morning,
after making some trivial changes to the /etc/raddb/users file,
radiusd is extremely slow to start, spending anyway from 4 to 10
minutes from startup to processing of requests.

The radius.log file shows this gap of time between the
"reading config files" entry, and the "ready to process requests"
entry.

We are pulling our hair out trying to understand what is causing this.

For what it's worth, I replaced the orginal 'users' file and restarted
radiusd, but the same slow startup occurred.

Has anyone else seen this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

john
