These are actually Lucent LT winmodems in disguise. I understand that
the LT winmodem firmware (software) will work with these, although I've
never actually done it. I have heard, however, that using the Lucent
generic LT code will kill some kind of Compaq voice software that comes
on their machines. It will work for everything else, but it may ruin
the functionality of that particular program. For this reason, I've
shied away from having customers use the LT code on these. I've always
just had them use the following compaq softpaq upgrade:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp9001-9500/sp9017.exe

You can get the instructions for performing the upgrade at:

ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp9001-9500/sp9017.txt

This will upgrade the modem to version 1.6.15.1--quite a bit higher than
the 1.3.12 than your modem is currently running. I'm not sure what
Lucent revision this corresponds with, but it was the latest one that I
could find on compaq's website. I think this one was put out in
December of 1998, so it should be fairly recent. It has worked great on
our customers who have tried it.
