Have you tried connecting with the iMac v.34 modem CCL file? If you have
any noise to speak of on your phone line, the iMac modem won't work worth
beans. Lowering it to v.34 fixes the problem.

You should be able to get the file on Apple's tech support web site, if
you don't already have it.
