(PMOD) DUN vs Hyperterm

We have a user with a USR Sportster Winmodem. He used to get solid 33.6
connections every time.
Then he upgraded to V90. Now using DuN(1.3) he only gets 31.2 but if he
connects using Hyperterm he gets between 45-48k without any problem.
What does DuN send to the modem that causes this degradation?
So far he hasnt put in any extra init strings.
