Some PortMaster Synchronous Office Routers (Models OR-LS
and OR-HS) manufactured between July 10 and July 25, 1996,
running ComOS 3.4.2L, had a corrupt configuration file loaded
into them, manifesting itself as an inability to save the configuration
on the W1 synchronous port.

The range of serial numbers on units affected are:

OR-HS 1J01010 through 1J01219
OR-LS 1L03238 through 1L03397

Office Routers with serial numbers outside those ranges do not
have this problem. PortMaster products other than the OR-LS
and OR-HS do not have this problem.

The symptom is that if the W1 port is configured and saved, after
a reboot the W1 port returns to its default configuration. This is a
software problem and there are two methods of fixing the
problem. Either method will work; use whichever method you
prefer.

METHOD 1: Erase the flash memory holding the configuration
and re-enter the entire configuration in the unit. This requires
physical access to the unit since you will have to re-enter its IP
address.

To use this method, attach a console to port S0 (9600 baud, 8
databits, no parity, 1 stop bit), log in as !root with the
administrative password, and enter the following two commands:

set register 0xffff 0x0102
reboot

There will be a pause of up to 20 seconds after the first command
while the PortMaster erases the flash memory holding its
configuration. The ComOS will not be affected, just the
configuration will be erased. AFTER the PortMaster reboots,
re-enter your entire configuration and do a "save all". The
problem is now fixed.

METHOD 2: Upgrade the unit to 3.4.2Lc1 which contains a
patch to correct the W1 configuration area. This method is more
complicated than the first method but doesn't require re-entering
your configuration or physical access to the unit. FTP the file
ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/upgrades/or_3.4.2Lc1 and place it
in your /usr/portmaster/data directory, then run
/usr/portmaster/pminstall and upgrade your PortMaster Office
Router to release or_3.4.2Lc1. After the upgrade is complete,
reboot the PortMaster. The W1 configuration area will be fixed,
and you can then either continue running 3.4.2Lc1 or downgrade
safely to 3.4.2L. The two releases are identical except for the
software patch.

pminstall is available as part of the PMconsole distribution
distributed on CDROM and on
ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/software for AIX, Alpha OSF/1,
BSD/OS, HP/UX, Irix, Linux, Solaris, SunOS. PMconsole 1.1
for Windows can be used to perform the upgrade.

UPGRADING FROM 3.4.1L

If you are currently running 3.4.1L you should either continue
running 3.4.1L or upgrade to 3.4.2Lc1. Do not upgrade to
3.4.2L directly. You can upgrade from 3.4.1L to 3.4.2Lc1 and
then safely upgrade from 3.4.2Lc1 to 3.4.2L.
