I talked to Cary - he never dropped it, he's been trying to get some answers.
He thought that last he spoke with Patrick, Patrick had a work around (change
the MTU) so this wasn't a time critical issue, mote of a "let's try to find
out why that happens thing".
Cary is going to call Patrick now, or tommorrow if he can't get to him.
So in the end it looks like it was a simple miscommunication. Cary was doing
one thing and Patrick was expecting something else.
