I will cut and paste :-) our publicly stated position on this issue.

"We are looking at several options as we speak. There are a number of
proposed technologies for 56K, none which is even available today to
test as an inter operable standard. Additionally there will very likely be
significant vendor inter operability issues to overcome. Our stance is that
PM3 architecture is one of the only products that utilizes a DSP design that
specifically addresses the ability to remotely upgrade in the field in
anticipation of new standards such as this one or any of the DSL or cable
modem technologies that may develop. It is therefore our design intension to
allow field upgradeability. Without more detailed information of
implementation issues it would be irresponsible for any vendor to
"guarantee" upgradability, for sure that is our intention. The PM2 for
example is 3 1/2 years old as a product, and still continues to support our
software upgrades. As we gather more information I will upgrade the list as
to progress in this area."
