Well, how about this question:

If I bring up an ISDN connection, and send nothing but DNS zone =
serial
queries at the rate of 2/hour, how much load am I placing on the =
telco
infrastructure?

I know if I was using an analog modem the phone company would be =
sending
at least a carrier signal 24/7.

Same as if you were pounding the port. Bits are bits. The =
infrastructure doesn't know the difference between one's and =
zero's when it is swithcing a bit stream. The switch (and/or =
switches) still has to do the Time Slot Interchanging on every =
single second a call is established. This is basically a private =
line using the shared resources of the network rather than =
dedicated resources. You are stealing time slots from all of the =
other users in the entire network and should be ashamed of =
yourself :-).

If you are using ISDN, why don't you set up a call for 10 seconds =
to do your DNS and then drop the connection? This is what switched =
services are desinged for. They had an excellent article a few =
months back in Telephony that explains a lot of this very well.=20
