Oh no, just use some control characters:
^P for previous line, ^A for start of line, ^E for end of line and so
on. Just look into command line history of tcsh or bash.
It could even work with teletype emulations. Anyone remembering the
old EDIT from VAX/VMS on LA36? Nice thing...
