I'd suspect they had some faulty cat5 cables. I use a mix of cat2 (flat
satin 8 conductor) and cat5 for serial...and have not had any more trouble
with cat5 than flat cable. I have made a few bad cables, but when you're
learning a new skill, that happens.

For anyone curious, I use cat5 between Cyclades and USR MP gear since each
needs RJ45 and the pinout was a bit odd to do with flat wire. For
Cyclades to modems that take db25, I use flat cable and do the pinout in
the rj45-db25 adaptor. For db25 to db25 connections, I still use flat
cable and a pair of adaptors as it's easier to work with.
