The MacInTouch web site (http://www.macintouch.com) this morning
contains this item from someone who works at an ISP:

> "We recently upgraded our Bay Networks 5399 modem cards to the
> latest firmware version to resolve a conflict with certain Compaq
> modems. In doing this, we discovered that none of our customers
> with Geoport Express modems (installed in certain models of 4400,
> 63xx, 6400 and 6500 machines) were able to connect. Bay has this
> issue listed as a "top priority" but I thought I'd let you know so
> you can alert other ISPs who might run into this problem. I'm also
> hoping that there is someone out there who has managed to resolve
> this problem, as Bay is at a standstill and Apple has been less
> than supportive."

This sort of thing has been cited as one reason Livingston and now
Lucent RABU takes care to avoid breaking compliant modems to support
the other kind.

It is also part of the joys of V.90. Sigh!

--John (we have a goodly number of the Geoport Express Modems
mentioned in use by customers <and one with a staff member> which
seem to work OK)
