We use Lucent PM3's, Cisco AS5300, AssuredAccess/Alcatel X1000's and I can
tell you from experience that the cheapo modems/old firmware/bad phone
lines affect them all. Cheapo modem a may not work with the PM3 but will
with Cisco and AssuredAccess, cheapo modem b might work well with PM3,
AssuredAccess, and so on. I also have to agree with the other posters who
say that 99.9% of modems can be made to connect with newer firmware and/or
an init string. Statistics wise, all the boxes we have run within 1 to 2
percent of each other on termination causes from radius and syslog info.
