You're wrong, old Mac serial ports are good up to 115k, except for few
weird systems like the Mac LC. The Macs actually had better serial ports
than most of the PCs of the time.
The "Unknown rate" problem is really easy to fix: it means that the
customer doesn't have the right modem script (CCL file) for their modem
selected in the Modems control panel. They probably have Global Village
Gold/Platinum selected, what they need is Global Village 28.8-56k. They
can find this on the CD that came with the modem.
