There are usually (always?) two kinds of market in any area....the first
is the segment of customers who will buy the cheapest access there is. The
second is the segment of customers who are willing to pay a few extra
bucks in return for a higher cut of service. The second category is often
comprised of "serious" business users or people who use the net
extensively. They'd usually rather pay an extra 10 or 15 dollars a month,
if they're confident they can get an extra 20% of service ;)
We're in the same boat, Dale. We have 4 or 5 serious competitors, in a
relatively small market (300,000 population in a smallish metro area),
yet we consistently win the customers we've chosen to target - business.
We've done it by doing things nobody else will do, like offering CNE's and
CCIE's to integrate a corporate customer's WAN with the Internet, or
offering AS/400 programmers to get their Intranet to work ;) There is
always a market for top notch service, and once you establish your
reputation, people WILL pay for it :)
